Maybe you don't need to do more

Hey there,

There’s a pattern I’ve noticed after 19 years of working with business owners.

When something isn’t working, our first instinct is usually to add something.

More marketing. More sales. More courses. More content.

More networking. More help. More software. More money.

Surely if we could just figure out what we’re not doing yet, we could fix the problem.

Except sometimes the thing that changes the business isn’t doing more.

It’s asking a better question about what’s already happening.

I’ve seen a retailer realize the answer wasn’t increasing online sales. It was investing more deeply in the highly profitable education program she’d been discounting because it came easily to her.

I’ve watched a service provider realize she didn’t need to spend 20 hours a week networking for more clients. She needed to protect the time she already had and stop over-delivering to the clients already paying her.

And I’ve watched a physician realize the expensive software change she thought she couldn’t afford was actually the thing that would allow her to collect the revenue she’d already earned.

None of them needed another generic business strategy.

They needed enough distance from the day-to-day to question what they had assumed was true.

That’s something I want to do more of with you.

I’m taking over One Really Good Question, a Friday email I’ve been part of creating through my work with Gwen Bortner at Everyday Effectiveness.

And the premise is exactly what the name says.

No five things you need to do this week.

No new framework to implement.

No homework disguised as “value.”

Just one really good question designed to give you a few minutes of distance from your business so you can notice something you might not see while you’re busy running it.

If that sounds useful, click here to start getting One Really Good Question in your inbox every Friday.

Through the magic of Kit, you'll be automatically subscribed without having to fill out any information.

And no, I’m not going to tell you what your answer should be.

That would defeat the whole point.
